More Information: • Residence: Virginia. John was living in Frederick County when he first joined the Revolution and later lived in Culpeper County. • Revolutionary War Military Service: According to his pension records, John enlisted from Frederick County, Virginia near the beginning of the revolution and served 3 years as a private in the companies of Capts. Landson, Yancy and Terrel in the Virginia Regiment under Col. Edmonds. • Residence: Wilkes County, North Carolina. According to his Revolutionary War pension records, John moved to Wilkes County sometime after the war. • Residence: Hopkins County, Kentucky. 1780 John moved from Wilkes County, North Carolina to Hopkins County in the early 1800's. He was listed in the 1810 Census in Hopkins County and was probably there a few years before that. • 1810 United States Federal Census, John Hankins household, Hopkins County, Kentucky 1780: John's household consisted of 1 m 10-15 [Timothy], 2 m 16-25 [Barnabas & Daniel], 1 m 45+ [John], 1 f 10-15 [Rachel], 3 f 16-25 [Susannah, Nancy & Mary], 1 f 45+ [Sarah]. • 1820 United States Federal Census, John Hankins household, Hopkins County, Kentucky 1792: John's household consisted of 1 m 45+ [John], 1 f 16-25 [unknown - all daughters were married prior to 1820], 1 f 45+ [Sarah]. • Not Found in Census: John could not be found in the 1830 census but he was apparently still living in Hopkins County because he filed a Revolutionary War Pension application there in Oct 1832. It's possible that he (& maybe Sarah) were living with one of their children in 1830. • Revolutionary War Pension Application: John filed application #S16404 in October 1832 in Hopkins County, Kentucky. John's pension was approved 6 Feb 1833 for $80 per annum effective 4 Mar 1831 and ending 4 Mar 1833. He was paid $160.00. He was 72 years old at the time of his application in 1832. • Possible Ancestry: John's parents may have been William Hankins & Jane Sharp but further research is needed to prove this relationship. John married Sarah GILL on 30 October 1783 in Frederick County, Virginia.1789 (Sarah GILL was born bef. 1765 1780.)
• Children: The children of John & Sarah are mostly identified by assumption. John was the only Hankins listed in the Hopkins County, Kentucky Census in 1810. In 1820, John, Barnabas & Timothy are the only Hankins' listed. Marriage records in Hopkins County from 1811 - 1816 show marriages for Barnabas, Polly, Nancy, Rachel, Timothy & Susannah Hankins so they are all likely John's children. |
