Occupation: John was Sheriff of Hopkins County and was also a wheat farmer & miller. He operated several mills in western Kentucky. He also owned a movie theater in Providence.

Obituary: Published in the Providence Enterprise on 16 June 1938 in Providence, Webster County, Kentucky. 1114 John Hankins, 82, died at 6:30 pm Friday at his home on Maple Street following an illness of smallpox. He had been ill for a long time and for several weeks was a hospital patient, so that when smallpox developed he was unable to withstand the ravages of the disease. Mr. Hankins was at one time sheriff of Hopkins County, and had owned the Phoenix Mills here a number of years ago. Survivors are the widow, who is now ill with varioloid, two daughters, Mrs. Julia Mercle of Longview, Washington and Mrs. Georgia Gaither of Chicago, Ill and one son, Tom Hankins, who has lived in Manila, Philippine Islands for forty-three years. Burial was at noon Saturday in Odd Fellows cemetery in Madisonville.
