Joseph Smith LANIER 1504,3718
General Notes: Joseph was probably born in Randolph County, Alabama but possibly in Georgia. He seems to alternate between Alabama and Georgia in census records. More Information: • 1860 United States Federal Census, William W. Lanier household, Rock Mills, Randolph County, Alabama: Joseph was living with his parents. He was listed as Joseph Lanier, age 13, born in Alabama. [His middle initial is unreadable.] 3721 • 1870 United States Federal Census, J. S. Lanier household, Chambers County, Alabama: Joseph, Nancy and their daughter, Lula were living in Beat #1. He was listed as a farm hand, age 22, born in Georgia, unable to read or write. 3722 • 1880 United States Federal Census, Joseph Lanier household, Rock Mills, Randolph County, Alabama: Joseph, Nancy and their five children (Lula, Will, Emma, Jeff and Hettie) were living in Beat #11. Joseph was listed as a farmer, age 32, born in Georgia. It was noted in the 1870 census that he could not read or write but this record indicates that he could. 1504 • Occupation: Joseph worked as a farmer & paddle maker. 3723 Census records show he was a farmer but descendants of his daughter, Sallie, were told he was also a paddle maker and traveled around making paddles for mills and boats. • Residence: W. W. Watkins Plantation, Muldon, Monroe County, Mississippi. Joseph and his family were tenant farmers on Dr. W. W. Watkins' plantation at Muldon. • 1900 United States Federal Census, Joseph Lanier household, Muldon, Monroe County, Mississippi: Joseph and Nancy were living on Dr. W. W. Watkins' plantation where he was a tenant farmer. They listed children Lula, Will, Emma, Jeff, Hettie, George, Fred, James, Lilly and Sallie as living with them along with Nancy's sister, Mattie Bennett. Will, Jeff and Hettie were definitely not living in their household and it's possible that Lula and Emma were not living there either. Joseph was listed as a farmer, age 53, born Dec 1846 in Alabama, married 30 years. It was noted that he could read and write. 1502 Joseph married Nancy Jane BENNETT, daughter of John T. BENNETT and Martha Lucinda GAMBLE, about 1869.3717 (Nancy Jane BENNETT was born on 27 Jul 1852 in Heard County, Georgia,3724 died on 12 Oct 1926 in Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia 3725 and was buried on 13 Oct 1926 in Hillview Cemetery, LaGrange, Troup County, Georgia 3726,3727,3728.) |
