1850 United States Federal Census, Alfred Owins [sic] household, Rockcastle County, Kentucky 847: Matt was living with his parents. He was listed as Madison Owins, age 12, birth place not listed.

1860 United States Federal Census, Mat Owens household, Rockcastle County, Kentucky 848: Matt was listed as head of household, living with his father, Alfred. He was listed as age 22.

Organizations: Matt was a member of the Masons for many years and held the office of Tyler (door keeper) and Scribe. He became a Mason in 1864.

Property: 1865 1875, in Rockcastle County, Kentucky. 849 Tax Lists exist for Rockcastle County until 1875. Starting in 1857 when he turned 21, Matt was listed on the Tax List but he didn't own property until 1865. From 1865 through 1875, he owned varying acreage near Skeggs Creek.

Obituary: Published in the Mt. Vernon Signal on 26 March 1920 in Mount Vernon, Rockcastle County, Kentucky. 829 Mr. Madison Crawford Owens better known as "Uncle Mat Owens", died at his home near Freedom on Monday, March 22. Mr. Owens was born 1836 being eighty three years old on the fourth of last January. He married Miss Celia Owens May 7, 1863. Six children were born to this union: Mrs. Gillis Craig of Lancaster; Mrs Mack Fount Craig, who lives near Willailla; Mrs. John C. Taylor, Mount Vernon, George Owens, David Owens and Wesley Owens, all of Rockcastle. He was the oldest member of the Freedom Baptist church where his funeral was preached on Tuesday by Rev. A. J. Pike. He was buried by Ashland Lodge 640 F & A M of Mount Vernon. He was the oldest member of this lodge, having been made a Mason in 1864 and having lived the fifty-six years of his Masonic life as an honored and loved member of the lodge in which he was made a Mason. As a Mason, as a citizen and as a Christian gentleman, he held a sacred place in many hearts.
